Western Transit Shed, headquarters of Hoare Lea Lighting, won both the ‘Workplace Lighting’ and ‘Low Carbon’ Awards at the Lighting Design Awards 2014. The scheme uses Optelma linear systems like Quad and Tatoo to provide direct ambient light complimented by RGBW indirect lighting, with Stretch Ceilings creating a daylit feel and spacious environment in meeting rooms. Ipads control the stretch ceilings with extensive scene-setting options, incorporating DALI controlled blinds to balance natural light in the space for maximum efficiency.
Working with into lighting and Lumsden Design, Optelma created a lighting scheme for a retail space showcasing the National Theatre’s gift range and extensive collection of books. The solution utilised Optelma’s made-to-measure profile Quad 62 in an anodised black finish, with an asymmetric diffuser to help wash the bookshelves and dark oak interior. Integrated downlights provide a direct lighting solution to target merchandising spaces, including reading areas and theatrical product stands. The result is a scheme with excellent performance and glare control, which assists in delineating the space and drawing people into the store.
Virgin Active’s Walbrook Health Club, part of the luxurious ‘Collection’ brand, materialised from the creative partnership of Hoare Lea Lighting and Architects Atelierdb. The large gym floor and studios are lit using recessed Quad linear system to provide general lighting as well as architectural features that draw people through the space. Decorative accents are added using Optelma’s Firo mini profile which adds to the energy of the spaces as well as reaffirming the brand. The changing rooms and shower areas use warmer lighting and darker areas to calm the spaces and create relaxing, hospitable environments.
Leading homewares retailer Habitat wanted to increase customer satisfaction using creative retail spaces crafted by KVB Design. The unique architecture of each individual Habitat store was central to creating visually exciting environments, with Optelma’s Keno recessed linear system providing versatile lighting. This is complimented by the Sam linear system with integrated adjustable downlights, which was used for retail areas with higher ceilings. In many of the entrance areas and large stairwells which required more impact, Jogg Pendants were fitted to provide ambient lighting and visual interest, breaking up the spaces within the store.
This major redevelopment of Durham University’s gateway building is a state-of-the-art sustainable building, designed by Cundall and lit buy Optelma to meet the establishments ambitious sustainability aspirations. This included upgrading to LED with automatic lighting control to minimise energy usage, complemented by maximisation of natural daylight. Laxa Pendants create playful local lighting around the canteen with Quad 100 lighting the corridors and expansive library. ‘BREEAM’ awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating to Durham, who also won ‘Best Education Building’ at LABC Building Excellence Northern Awards 2013.
