Lighting designer Nulty, architect Gensler and lighting manufacturer Optelma, were tasked to create the architectural lighting scheme for the new visitor reception and staff entrance of Selfridges Head Office at Nation House, Wigmore Street, London.
Based on Optelma’s Keno system, a series of parallel light troughs were custom-designed by Optelma. Located in the main reception area and above the escalators, these add impact and offer visual interest, while helping to guide staff and visitors through the space.
Using a fabricated top section, the bespoke linear troughs create diffuse light by incorporating a twin run of 5 W/m LED tape. The troughs also house adjustable, state-of-the-art 48V 2000 lumen Xicato LED spotlights, via a unique mounting gimbal, to give both
efficient and functional illumination. The emergency lighting is integrated for a seamless solution.
The combination of ambient and accent lighting complements the contemporary interior, creating a minimal backdrop which allows the artwork to take centre stage.
Emilio Hernandez, Director at Nulty, commented on the project, “Access is extremely difficult above the escalators, so a reliable and robust product was needed. Optelma supported the project from concept to delivery, delivering a customised version of their Keno system which matched our requirements perfectly.”
