Commenting on the success of the solution, Richard Battye, Associate, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios said: ‘Integrated into the ceiling’s complex geometry – with its nineteen different pyramids and fifty-nine different corner angles – the lighting provides both day-to-day lighting and full colour control across the 1,000m2 space. The scheme supports Southbank Centre’s ever-widening artistic programming, from subtle changes of scene for a function or recital to their first club night ‘Concrete Lates’ – bringing new uses and new audiences to this stunning Brutalist space.”

The walkway through the gym to the weights and mezzanine level is lit by a continuous thin 40m recessed line-of-light – QUAD. This turns through 90 degrees to follow the walkway through the studio and into a corridor framed with further profiles. Within the ‘red’ corridor, goal posts of recessed QUAD create a feature that accentuates the ‘shrinking’ height of the corridor.
The exercise intense Cycle Studio posed particular challenges. The desire was to evoke the cycling metaphor with circles of light to emphasis movement. However, low ceilings precluded the use of pendants and downlights were felt too pedestrian for the space. The solution was provided by Atelier Sedap’s Microblade Circles, which integrate into the shallow ceiling void and contrast dramatically with the dark ceilings and moody feel.
Chris Fox, Lighting Designer, Hoare Lea Lighting comments: “The lighting solution designed for Virgin Active’s Walbrook Health Club has helped to create a luxurious space that enriches the user’s experience. Optelma’s bespoke products assisted in delivering an integrated, all-LED design, which complements the high-end interior design and finishes used.”

The Summer Works programme is a national scheme that allows individual school authorities to undertake small-scale building works. The idea is they will be carried out during the summer months, avoiding any disruption to the school day.
As part of the ‘Summer Works 2020’ programme, two large secondary schools – Haggerston School and Stoke Newington School – in the London Borough of Hackney underwent several renovations. As the nominated lifecycle and FM works lighting supplier for the Hackney Learning Trust, who were the client for this project, LightPlanet was an integral part of the upgrade.
The brief was to replace all the existing fittings within all circulation areas of the three schools. Brand new LED fittings were required, and the whole project needed to be delivered in the summer holidays, and within the set budget.
As with all state-school lighting projects, LightPlanet’s design goal was to provide the best quality solution at the best price. This is reinforced with two objectives; to benefit the children of the school, and to ensure public money is not wasted. This in turn saves taxpayers’ money, while also allowing the same amount of funding to be spread across more projects within the borough.

A combination of recessed and suspended continuous linear profiles run along the ceiling and down the walls, complementing the elegant monochrome environment with clean lines of light. This extruded aluminium profile provides a direct lighting solution with excellent performance and glare control.
Throughout the linear installation 4000K Optaline LED boards were used. Optaline’s slender design and 50mm cut-points enabled the profiles to be customised to the bespoke lengths required, ensuring a stylish, flexible and energy-efficient solution.

Drad mini profile with RGBW LED in the watt bike zone has been used to create a chamfered design of LED lights. These dynamically extend in a continuous line from the walls to the ceiling of the space.
Jonathan Philips, National Sales Manager at Optelma, said: “Optelma is proud of our ongoing partnership with Third Space, having worked on a number of their existing health clubs. Our uniquely created lighting installations have now become a signature part of the work-out environment for Third Space members.
It is always exciting to be part of the project team for Third Space locations, bringing together the brand identity with elements of individuality for each club. With high-end clientele and expectations, Optelma’s expert solutions perfectly align with Third Space’s requirements.”
Ewald Damen, Creative Director at Virgile + Partners, said: “Third Space is known for its energetic health club environment. The design of the Mayfair club needed to ensure it stands out as a premium offering against high-street gym offerings.
The design harmoniously brings together bold and industrial features such as the architectural metal staircase, with refined pieces such as the bespoke cast reception desk”
Adding to the chic décor, the comfortable seating areas and dressing rooms are adorned in high-end stone, metal finish and walnut materials. The attention to detail is outstanding; creating the individual style to reflect the personality of the location, as well as appealing to the Mayfair community. ”

The courtyard created in the heart of the Palais is the public space, providing a spectacle of light with its triple height ornate ceilings. Separated from these grand public spaces, the new buildings including functional rooms, courtrooms and corridors are given privacy and a more contemporary feel.

Within the gym, Optelma’s Quad 46, in a number of continuous linear structures, with turns and angles, adds to the vibrant, geometric design. Further Quad 46 linear sections in the studio area provide a good level of light; positioned within the ceiling, these complement the downlight arrangement. Continuous rectangular Quad 46 structures illuminate many of the meeting rooms – their shapes mirror those of the tables, creating a distinct feature.
Throughout the building, in areas such as corridors, Nulty specified Optelma’s Quad linear profiles to create perimeter lighting. The profiles provide functional light, which accentuates the interior in both contemporary and traditional spaces.
Phil Copland, Senior Lighting Designer, Nulty, comments: ‘Working closely with Optelma, we created various feature luminaires for use throughout the building. The large feature cluster of pendants in the reception made a fantastic focal point in the space, thus creating an elegant and dynamic feature. The bronzed finish of the fittings complements the interior design and fuses the space together.’
